PSU Employee Transfer Season 2025: Complete City Relocation Checklist
Getting transferred to a new city? This step-by-step checklist covers everything government and PSU employees need to research, plan, and settle in — before the order even hits.
March and April bring two certainties in the lives of Indian PSU and government employees: summer heat, and transfer orders.
If you're staring at a posting to a new city — whether it's Hyderabad, Vizag, Bhopal, or somewhere you've never been — this checklist is for you. Use it before you pack a single box.
Before You Accept the Posting
1. Check the City's Livability Score
Not all Indian cities are equal for a relocated family. Key dimensions to evaluate:
- Cost of living — Can your salary stretch comfortably in this city?
- Schools — Are CBSE/KV schools well-rated and with seats available?
- Healthcare — Is there a good government or CGHS-empanelled hospital?
- Safety — Is it a city your family will feel comfortable in?
- Climate — Extreme heat or cold can impact health and quality of life
Use CityDex to see city scores across all 9 dimensions before you decide.
2. Research the PSU Presence
Some cities have large PSU colonies with established support networks — housing boards, schools, clubs. Others are effectively new territories. Cities with strong PSU presence include Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi, Bhilai, Bokaro, Rourkela, Bhubaneswar, Vizag, Chandigarh, Jaipur, and Nagpur.
Smaller PSU towns (Haldia, Paradip, Panipat) may have fewer options but tight-knit communities.
3. Understand Your Housing Entitlement
Check your organization's housing policy:
- Is company accommodation available in the new city?
- What is the HRA slab for the new city (X/Y/Z classification)?
- Is there a waitlist for company quarters?
- What is the local rental market like for your budget?
City Research Checklist (Before Moving)
Schools
- Look up KV (Kendriya Vidyalaya) schools in the city — they have a dedicated quota for employees on transfer
- Check CBSE school options if KV is full — enrollment mid-year requires documentation
- Research if your child's board is widely available (CBSE vs ICSE vs State Board)
- Confirm admission cut-off dates (most schools close mid-June)
Healthcare
- Verify CGHS coverage — is the city a CGHS-covered area?
- If not CGHS, check if your organization has a CSMA/CSMA-equivalent tie-up
- Locate the nearest government hospital and major private empanelled hospitals
- If family member has a chronic condition, research specialist availability
Housing
- Check average 2BHK rent in decent localities — use CityDex rent data as a reference
- Identify 3–4 localities that are: safe, close to office/school, and within budget
- Ask colleagues or PSU WhatsApp groups for broker recommendations
- Budget for 2–3 months rent as deposit (standard in most cities)
Locality Scouting
| City | Budget Locality (2BHK) | Mid-range Locality |
|---|---|---|
| Hyderabad | Uppal, LB Nagar | Kondapur, Madhapur |
| Chennai | Ambattur, Tambaram | Adyar, Velachery |
| Kochi | Aluva, Kalamassery | Kakkanad, Edapally |
| Jaipur | Vaishali Nagar, Mansarovar | C-Scheme, Tonk Road |
| Bhubaneswar | Patia, Nayapalli | Saheed Nagar, IRC Village |
